How to Build and Maintain a Compost Heap That Works

Good compost turns garden waste into something that feeds the soil better than anything you can buy. It closes the loop between what you grow and what you put back. Building the Heap

Compost that is ready on top but raw underneath happens in heaps that are never turned. You can sieve the top layer and use it, then leave the rest to keep composting. Or turn the whole thing and wait another few months.

When It Is Ready

Finished compost is dark, crumbly, and smells of earth. You should not be able to identify what went in. It takes anywhere from three months to two years depending on how you manage the heap.

Hot heaps that are turned regularly can produce usable compost in three to six months. Cold heaps take a year or more. Both methods work. Choose based on your situation.

Some growers use a coarse sieve to separate finished compost from twigs and unrotted material. This gives you fine compost for sowing and potting. The unrotted material goes back into the active heap.

You can use compost that still has some visible structure. It is fine as a mulch or dug into beds a few weeks before planting. Fully finished compost is better for seed sowing and potting mixes because it is more stable and uniform.

Regional and Seasonal Variations

Decomposition slows in winter. Microbial activity drops when temperatures fall. Your heap may stop steaming and appear inactive. It is still working, just slowly. Do not worry. It will pick up again in spring.

In cold northern regions and Scotland, heaps can freeze solid in hard winters. Insulating the sides with straw bales or cardboard helps. So does building the heap larger. More volume retains more heat.

In mild western regions with high rainfall, heaps can become waterlogged. Cover the top with an old piece of carpet, a tarp, or a sheet of corrugated iron. Leave the sides open for air. This keeps rain out without stopping decomposition.

In drier eastern regions, heaps need regular watering in summer. Check moisture levels when you add material. If the heap feels dusty and dry, water it thoroughly. Decomposition stops without moisture.

Autumn brings leaves, lots of them. Leaves are high in carbon and low in nitrogen. They take a long time to break down on their own. Mix them with grass clippings or other green material.
