Too much nitrogen late in the season produces lush tops but poor bulb development. The long growing season is crucial to consider. Sets planted in March or April won’t be ready until July or August. Seeds sown in autumn for overwintering varieties occupy the ground even longer. Row spacing needs careful planning when companion planting. Standard onion spacing is about 10cm apart in rows 30cm apart. This leaves plenty of room for companion rows in between. You can plant a row of carrots, lettuce, or radishes in the middle of each onion row gap, giving both crops adequate space.
Checkerboard patterns work well for slower-growing companions like beetroot. Plant onions at standard spacing, then position beetroot in the gaps between each onion in alternating rows. This creates a staggered effect where both crops have room to develop without direct competition. The visual effect is quite satisfying too, with contrasting foliage patterns.
Edge planting suits herbs and flowers that benefit onions without needing to be intimately mixed. Plant marigolds, chamomile, or parsley around the perimeter of your onion bed. They provide pest deterrence and beneficial insect habitat whilst keeping cultivation of the main crop straightforward. This approach makes crop rotation simpler too, as you can rotate the onions without worrying about integrated companions.
Timing your plantings creates natural succession. If you plant lettuce when you set out onions in March, the lettuce finishes in May. You can then plant a second quick crop like radishes in those gaps, harvesting them before the onions need the space in late June. Advanced Companion Planting Strategies

Nitrogen management becomes more complex with companions. Onions need good nitrogen availability during their first 6-8 weeks of growth but excess nitrogen later produces all tops and no bulbs. I’ve found that non-legume companions work better for most situations. This approach requires fertile soil and consistent care but dramatically increases productivity.
Vertical space often goes unused in onion beds because onions themselves stay low. I’ve experimented with growing climbing peas on the sunny side of onion beds, using short supports that don’t shade the onions excessively. This works reasonably well with spring-sown onions that bulb up as the peas finish in July. The peas add nitrogen through root nodules that benefits subsequent crops.
Harvest timing coordination matters enormously. The whole point of companion planting falls apart if you can’t actually get your crops out of the ground. Choose companions that finish well before onions need lifting, or ensure their root systems don’t interlock with onion roots. Urban growing conditions often mean warmer microclimates and sheltered spaces. City gardens and allotments typically get a few degrees of extra warmth from surrounding buildings.
